In 2023, 207.1 thousand fraudulent sites were registered in Russia. This is 86% more than last year. Bi.Zone informed Izvestia about this.
Phishing turned out to be the most popular scheme: 89% of company requests involved it. Several factors influence this: scammers are improving social engineering techniques, financial services are migrating to a digital format, and demand for online services is growing.
Another common tactic is “make money fast.” Under the pretext of profitable investments, they lured victims to a website that imitated the page of a large Russian or global company. There were thousands of sites of this type and, to register there, the user answered questions of a confidential and financial nature, and also left personal data; All this information fell into the hands of scammers.
Other common schemes include stealing domains and posting phishing content on them, as well as scams involving classified advertising platforms. The criminals also stole social media accounts and then “processed” the users on the victim’s contact list.
By hacking an account, scammers often also gained access to passwords, photos of bank cards, documents and other information saved in favorites.
