The New York Times said it is suing Microsoft and OpenAI for copyright infringement.
In issuing the recommendation, the company copied and used their publications to train the ChatGPT and Copilot neural networks and now “directly competes” with their content. At the same time, these language models “can limit output that reads Times content verbatim, communicates it carefully, and imitates expressive style.
This fact is “reputational and damaging” and will deprive the publication of “subscriptions, continental, advertising and affiliate income,” the NY Times said. AI models “threaten high-quality journalism,” harming news outlets’ ability to viralize and monetize content.
The Times also noted that it tried to negotiate with both companies about fair monetization when using their content, but did not come to a common decision. [The Verge]
