Wirth was born in Winterthur, Switzerland, in 1934. He studied electrical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and received his doctorate in 1963. After graduation, Wirth worked as a research assistant at the Federal Computer Research Institute in Zurich. From 1968 to 1999 he served as professor of computer science at the University of Zurich.
Wirth is best known for his work on programming languages. He is the creator of Pascal, a structured programming language first released in 1970. Pascal was widely used in education and scientific research and helped popularize structured programming methodology.
Wirth also developed other programming languages, including Modula-2, Oberon, and Oberon-2. He also wrote many influential books on computer science.
Wirth has received numerous awards, including the Turing Award, the highest honor in computer science. He was also a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
