There were two cases in total; The first judge rejected the claim that Apple “perpetuated and benefited from the fraud” but granted the plaintiffs permission to amend and refile the claim. As a result, at the second hearing in 2022, the judge approved the revised case.
The gist of the allegations is that Apple is profiting from customers without preventing gift card fraud. Scammers mislead people with various tricks by sending users App Store, iTunes or Apple Store gift cards and forcing them to make purchases. For example, people thought the payments were necessary to resolve urgent issues such as hospital bills or debt collection, but few people questioned why payment should be made with gift cards.
Apple has been accused of aiding scammers by taking advantage of the fact that it sells nearly 30% of its products using gift cards. But now a compromise agreement must be pursued.
