The Mesa R300g driver covers R300 series cards up to R500 (Radeon X1000 series). Even though the driver has been officially deprecated for years, the developer community continues to improve it, adding additional performance, fixing bugs, and maintaining compatibility with new features. This commitment stands in stark contrast to the situation of registered drivers.

The current update focuses on implementing further NIR downgrades for vertex shaders, resulting in potential performance gains and smoother graphics rendering. The initiator of the changes was independent developer Pavel Ondracka.

While the new hardware certainly offers more performance and efficiency, it’s encouraging to see the R300 community supporting these classic GPUs in 2024.
