The online course aggregator Skill2Go analyzed more than 1.2 million current vacancies on job search sites and collected the 9 most mentioned skills by a commercial director with an average salary of 500 thousand rubles in 2024. RB.RU learned about the results.
What skills are required from a commercial director for the specified salary:
- Management
The most mentioned skill. To increase sales and profits, a sales manager must be able to manage both financial flows and his team. The most common phrases found in job postings were “management experience,” “team management,” and “sales department management.”
Texts about job offers rarely indicate how many employees they are talking about, but if this information is available, experience managing teams of 20 to 40 people, less often 100 people, is most often required.
- Financial planning
Also one of the basic skills. Must be able to manage the company’s income and expenses.
- Salesmanship
Employers expect a commercial director to have experience in independent B2B sales or experience working as the head of a sales department, as it is necessary to negotiate with senior officials of commercial companies.
Specific sales KPIs are not indicated on vacancies. Salary is usually expressed as “salary + percentage.”

Skill2Go notes that vacancies without salary information generally do not have a separate “work experience” element. “It is increasingly clear that candidates are being considered for higher salaries not only with work experience, but also with experience in a specific industry or domain. Most often they are looking for an employee with 3-5 years of experience,” Skill2Go CEO Alexander Ivanov told RB.RU.

Working with finance requires these skills, but employers classify them as a separate category. The most common examples of what is required of candidates are: “Analysis of company performance and budgets”, “task analysis”, “analysis and control of sales performance”, “Analytical and strategic thinking”, “Skills analytical and communication.
- Development strategy
The employer expects the commercial director to have enough experience to build a business development strategy and have a vision, focusing on company data and applying analytical skills.
- Strategic thinking
On the other hand, employers highlight the skill of strategic thinking.
- Planning
After building a development strategy, it is necessary to decompose the tasks and delegate them to the executors. We are mainly talking about task planning.
- English language skills
Demand for this skill is growing in the context of import substitution. Employers rarely impose specific requirements on the level of English language proficiency. The most common formulations are: “Ability to read and perceive information in English”, “Knowledge of the English language at a level sufficient to conduct business negotiations”, “Conduct long-term negotiations with foreign suppliers.”
