SMS bombers attacked banks 20% more frequently in the second half of 2023 than in the first half of the year. To do this, they used usernames and passwords from previously leaked personal data databases (PDD) and attempted to use them to log into customers’ bank accounts.
Damage caused by such an attack on a bank can amount to up to 2 million rubles. As a result, the costs of credit institutions for sending SMS have multiplied by 1.5 in the last six months, writes Vedomosti citing Servicepipe.
Attacks with SMS bombers can cause system overloads and failures, as well as increase the cost of paying for SMS, said Dmitry Dudkov, FACCT specialist in the fight against financial fraud.
With its help, fraudsters can also check the relevance of contacts from the stolen database and even make money, he added. Attackers usually choose banks and payment services for such attacks, but sometimes they also attack individuals: for example, with the help of SMS bombers, attackers try to request microcredit from a person.
