Experts from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge (England) decided to find out how smoking electronic cigarettes with nicotine-free liquid affects human lungs. An article about this study was published in the journal Microvascular Research.

Specifically, scientists looked at the effects of nicotine-free eVape on the lung endothelial barrier, oxidative stress, and inflammatory profile. The study involved three types of watermelon-flavored disposable e-cigarettes: those containing 10 and 20 mg of nicotine benzoate or none at all. Based on these liquids, experts prepared a solution with a concentration of 0% to 20%.

The results showed that eVape and its vapor caused severe cell death, disrupted the barrier function of the lung microvasculature, promoted increased release and higher expression of IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-18 cytokines. of ICAM-1.

At the same time, samples containing any level of nicotine caused damage to the lungs. Additionally, liquids without nicotine had the same chemical composition as liquids with nicotine, except for the nicotine itself.

It was also found that nicotine-free liquid increased ROS accumulation in endothelial cells. Excessive reactive oxygen species damage cells, causing cancer, heart disease, arthritis, etc. It is known to contribute to the development of diseases.
