The researchers used a technique called strain engineering, which involves applying controlled stress to materials at the atomic level. Such manipulation can change the electronic properties of materials, making them more conductive and suitable for use in quantum computing. By applying voltage to hafnium pentateluride, previously considered a “junk” material, the team was able to transform it into a material with unique quantum properties that could be used in quantum computers.
“Quantum computers can solve problems that classical computers cannot currently solve,” says one of the authors of the new paper.
