The Moscow Department of Transport has published the results of the first three years of operation of the Sfera facial recognition system. Since 2020, the AI video analysis system has helped the police detect more than 9 thousand criminals.

Facial recognition system helped find 9,000 criminals on Moscow transport

According to the press service of the capital’s Department of Transportation, since September 1, 2023, the system has identified 9,007 people who were on the federal list of wanted persons.

“[Удалось выявить] Almost 1.5 thousand dangerous criminals, among whom were murderers, rapists and thieves. “They were trying to escape after committing serious crimes and posed a threat,” the report says.

The majority of criminals detected were people who had committed minor crimes: 4,602. The system also identified 194 suspects of particularly serious crimes and 434 people who were on the international wanted list.

The Department of Transportation explains that the system “recognizes” only those listed in the search database, other passengers’ data is encrypted and only law enforcement has access to it.

When a person is detected, the system converts their face into a biometric key, then checks the data against search databases and then, if there is a match, automatically notifies the police within 3 to 5 seconds.

Additionally, in the last three years, Esfera has helped find 1,324 missing people, including 280 lost children.
