The test, sponsored by the US Army Engineering Research and Development Center, included the 2022 Rivian R1T pickup truck and the 2018 Tesla Model 3 sedan. Both vehicles easily punctured or bypassed the standard Midwest Guardrail System (MGS) at highway speeds. This highlights the potential danger existing barriers present to drivers and passengers in collisions with electric vehicles.

Electric vehicles are typically 20% to 50% heavier than conventionally powered vehicles, and their lower center of gravity results in increased impact energy during a crash. UNL, in collaboration with various partners, is actively researching and developing next-generation road barriers that can safely withstand the impacts of both electric vehicles and conventional vehicles. This involves using supercomputer simulations and real crash tests to analyze and improve barrier designs.
