The number of Mac viruses has increased in the past year, according to a report from Malwarebytes.

The most popular viruses remain ransomware. The number of attacks using them in 2023 increased by 68%. The record ransom demand is $80 million, just requested by the hacker group LockBit after an attack on Royal Mail computers.

Ransomware locks the system or encrypts data. In exchange for unlocking, cybercriminals demand a ransom.

In addition, attackers began to use zero-day vulnerabilities more often, and also became better at camouflaging themselves in the system so as not to be quickly detected.

Computers in the United States are hacked most often (45%), followed by Mac owners in the UK (7%), and users from Canada in third (4%). Russia is not in this ranking.

Experts note that ransomware works well on both Mac and Windows, and that there is no “Apple magic” that successfully combats competitive tools. [9to5Mac]
