The European Court rejected Alisher Usmanov’s appeal against EU sanctions

The founder of the USM holding company, Usmanov, was one of the first to be sanctioned after the start of the special operation in Ukraine, on February 28, 2022. The decision was justified by the “close ties” with the Russian president.

Usmanov himself called the EU sanctions unfounded, said he suffered enormous damage to his reputation from the sanctions and noted that he was included on the list because of his condition. In April, the businessman filed a lawsuit against the Council of the EU before the European Court and demanded that his personal sanctions be lifted.

Born in Uzbekistan, Alisher Usmanov is one of the richest businessmen in the world. His fortune is estimated at $14.4 billion.

In total, after the start of the special operation, the EU imposed sanctions on almost 2,000 natural and legal persons.
