The rule of thumb for many people is to drink a glass of lemon water in the morning. The drink’s popularity stems from a 2008 Japanese study linking the antioxidants in lemon to less weight gain. To date, there is no definitive evidence that lemon water is more beneficial than plain water for weight loss.

If you still want to try lemon juice, remember the following. The high acidity of lemon can damage tooth enamel if consumed too much. To minimize this risk, drink lemon water through a straw and then be sure to rinse your mouth with plain water. Additionally, people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or a similar condition may experience worsening symptoms such as heartburn or chest pain.
