Developer Fabian reported audio balance issues that Apple “still hasn’t fixed” in 12 years.

The point is that, under some circumstances, the sound can shift on its own to the left or right. This can be done by quickly pressing the increase button or muting the sound until the computer’s microprocessor is under more control. The error can only be corrected using the external Balance Lock application or manually within macOS.

Apple admitted the bug on February 12, 2012 in a support document for Mac OS X 10.2. However, this document has now been deleted and is only available in Internet archives.

Apparently, the company has not found a reliable solution to the problem.
