Apple said on its developer site that starting with iOS 17.4, users in Europe can’t add web apps to the iPhone home screen.

This happened due to the fact that alternative browser engines are available in the European Union, and Apple will not be able to ensure security and privacy when using them.

The companies are creating “an entirely new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS” to address “complex security and privacy issues associated with web applications using alternative browser engines.” This is not a priority for Apple at the moment, “given other requirements of the Digital Marketplace Act and the very low popularity of web applications among users.”

Instead of using web apps, you can allow bookmarks on your desktop, but they will open in your default browser rather than in a separate window. Notifications will not work.

Apple said the change complies with the requirements of the Digital Marketplace Act. The company was unable to preserve the feature even for those users who use Safari by default because the law requires browsers to be restricted on a level playing field. And if Safari has an advantage at the system level, it will be considered a violation.

In Russia, these changes are not a violation. Everything continues to work for us as usual. [9to5Mac]
