In the study, 35 different hard disk models, the total number of which exceeded 250,000 devices, were examined.
The data was presented in the form of a table, in which you can find information about the number of disks, operating time and number of failures. It is noteworthy that even a company specializing in data backup continues to use HDDs that are more than 8 years old.
Particular attention is paid to the AFR indicator (average annual failure rate), which is an indicator of HDD reliability. According to data, hard drives are becoming less reliable.
Seagate models with 14 TB capacity failed most frequently, while Western Digital’s 16 TB HDDs failed least frequently.
Analysis of the AFR chart for the period from 2021 to 2023 showed that 10 TB hard drives are the most likely to fail over time, and 6 TB hard drives are the least likely to fail.
According to the brand, Seagate models turned out to be the least reliable: the failure rate for 36 months exceeded 1.5%.
