In 2023, according to preliminary data from Rosstat, 1.264 million children will be born in Russia. This is the worst result since 1999, when after the default the birth rate was only 1,214 million people.

Russia has recorded the lowest birth rate in the last 24 years

Preliminary data was published on the Rosstat website. The statistics take into account the regions that were part of the Russian Federation at the beginning of 2022. Compared to 2022, the decrease in the birth rate in the country was 3%, compared to 2021 – 9.5% .

The worst year in demographic terms for Russia was 1999, when 1.214 million children were born after the default. However, as Alexey Raksha, former Rosstat demographic calculations advisor, explained to Forbes, the 1999 data did not take into account the number of people born in Chechnya and Crimea.

According to the specialist, the figures for 2023 are approximately comparable to historical records in the modern history of Russia.

At the same time, according to Rosstat, the outlook for the birth rate in the country may be even worse. The high version of the forecast expects 1,264.5 million children to be born in 2024. Low: only 1,158 million children.

The first update of data for 2023 should take place in March this year, and the department will provide final data on natural movement in the Russian Federation last year in June.
