The proposed laws would make it illegal to distribute deepfake photos, videos or audio, ban the unauthorized use of another person’s voice in advertising, expand laws to combat AI-related coercion, impersonation and identity theft, and include other similar measures.
The proposals come at a time of growing “national concern” over the possible misuse of artificial intelligence. New York thus joins California and other states “in trying to find a balance between innovation and regulation.”
According to the governor, the legislation aims to provide law enforcement with tools to combat attackers using artificial intelligence.
The proposals were included in Hochul’s budget plan, which must be approved by the state Legislature by March.
