Starting April 1, 2024, Microsoft will no longer provide new resources for Azure IoT Central applications. However, existing applications will continue to operate and be managed until the platform is completely shut down in 2027. What is Azure IoT Central? Launched in 2017, Azure IoT Central was designed to simplify IoT development by providing a turnkey solution to connect, manage, and analyze data from multiple devices. It served as a managed layer on top of the more basic Azure IoT Hub, offering features such as device management, control panels, and pre-built business logic.
The reasons why Microsoft abandoned Azure IoT Central remain unclear. The company did not comment on whether related services such as Azure IoT Hub or Azure IoT Edge would face a similar fate. This uncertainty adds to the uncertainty surrounding the future of Microsoft’s IoT strategy.
