The US Patent Office has denied OpenAI’s application to register the GPT trademark. The Office considered this term too general and indicated that its patent would prevent other companies from correctly describing their developments.
OpenAI failed to register the GPT trademark with the US Patent Office. The Verge writes about this.
The Patent and Trademark Office rejected OpenAI’s application to register the trademark as too generic. The agency also indicated that the GPT patent for OpenAI would prevent other companies from correctly describing their developments.
Instead, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies, many global companies have started using the term GPT (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) in their product names.
OpenAI first applied to register the GPT trademark in May 2023, but was also rejected. The company still has the possibility of registering the GPT patent by filing an appeal with the Trademark Trial Board.
