Apple has introduced a new security protocol, PQ3, that will be used by default in iMessage in iOS 17.4, macOS Sonoma 14.4 and watchOS 10.4.

The basic form of PQ3 is that it can protect users from sophisticated hacking attacks using quantum computers. At the moment, such tools have not been used, but Apple is setting the stage for the future, implying that quantum computers will become much more affordable.

The idea is simple: attackers can collect large amounts of today’s encrypted data and store it for future use. Even though they cannot decrypt this data today, they can store it until they acquire a quantum computer that can decrypt it in the future.

Apple didn’t just replace the existing algorithm with a new one, but rewrote the entire iMessage cryptographic protocol from scratch. The company claims this has made iMessage the most secure messaging app in the world. [The Verge]
