“This is a serious crime that causes serious damage to the company,” a representative from the prosecutor’s office said. The attackers now face up to 20 years in prison.

Haotian Song, 33, and Pengfei Xue, 33, bought fake iPhones in Hong Kong starting in 2017 and sent nearly 5,000 fake phones to Apple for repairs in the past two years, the official said.

They used fake serial numbers to avoid detection of their deception. In addition to spoofing serial numbers, fraudsters also used various aliases to cover their tracks.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the total loss from the fraud amounted to approximately $3 million.
