So what’s inside such an expensive device? Omdia analysts estimate that replacement parts for the helmet alone cost Apple more than $1,500.
The biggest thief of your budget is a dual screen! Two micro OLED displays with 4K resolution (from Sony, by the way) cost $228 each, so almost $500 in total. It’s no surprise that Apple wants to find cheaper suppliers, but that’s true for future models.
There are no exact figures for other components, but the lion’s share of the remaining thousand parts is apparently eaten by the M2 and R1 processors, which are the brains of the helmet. But that doesn’t take into account development, packaging, advertising, and of course Apple’s profits.
Meanwhile, a cheaper version of the headset is being developed – it will have a more modest screen and a simpler chip, like in the iPhone. However, it seems unlikely that the device will hit the shelves before 2025.
