The National Bank of Kyrgyzstan canceled the registration of Qiwi Bank as an operator of Contact and Qiwi-wallet services. This was announced by the head of the Payment Systems Department of the National Bank, Aibek Sultanaliev, as cited by Interfax. Previously, on February 21, the Central Bank of Russia revoked Qiwi Bank’s banking license.
On February 22, it was reported that the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan intends to deregister Qiwi Bank.
The reason, according to Sultanaliev, was the revocation of Qiwi Bank’s license in the country of registration.
He clarified that the payment of obligations to clients is carried out taking into account insurance instruments and contractual relationships between payment systems and the country’s banks.
“If problems arise with the receipt of funds from clients, first of all, clients will have to contact the banks themselves to solve them,” Sultanaliev explained.
Qiwi announced the completion of the sale of Russian assets and the corporate restructuring process on January 30. The amount of the transaction amounted to 23.75 billion rubles, taking into account the discount for the sale of assets with the participation of foreigners.
The company’s assets in Russia, consolidated under Qiwi JSC, were purchased by Qiwi CEO Andrey Protopopov through his owned Hong Kong Fusion Factor Fintech Limited.
- After Qiwi Bank’s license was revoked, Qiwi wallet replenishment became unavailable and the payment system also blocked the withdrawal of funds. Customers of other banks that collaborated with Qiwi also had problems. The Central Bank reported that the organization, according to preliminary estimates, has sufficient funds to return money from electronic wallets.
- On Tuesday it became known that Tochka Bank will buy back its clients’ funds trapped in Qiwi Bank for 8 billion rubles.
