Apple appears to have closed the project to create an Apple Watch Ultra with a MicroLED display.

Apple supplier OSRAM said it would “reconsider its pivot to MicroLED” after the cornerstone project was “unexpectedly shut down.” After this statement, the company’s shares fell by 40%.

Analysts from Counterpoint Research believe that we are talking about the Apple Watch Ultra with a MicroLED display. The company probably had to cancel the project due to high costs, risks and weak production.

The Apple Watch Ultra with MicroLED was expected to release in 2025 or 2026. There is a chance that Apple will find another supplier, but in this case the release time will be delayed indefinitely.

Apple has been producing MicroLED screens since 2014, but has not used them anywhere until now. MicroLED is more efficient and more efficient than OLED, but offers several benefits: increased brightness, energy efficiency, and increased contrast.
