It has been scientifically proven that elderly women who sit for 11.7 hours or more a day have a 30% increased risk of death. And this is regardless of whether they play sports or not.
In this study, researchers examined sitting and daily activity measurements collected using hip-mounted devices worn by 6,489 women for up to seven days. The ages of these women ranged from 63 to 99 years old. They were also observed for eight years.
A sedentary lifestyle poses health risks as it reduces muscle contraction, blood flow and glucose metabolism. And physical exercise cannot eliminate these consequences. If you sit for more than 11 hours a day in total and generally sit in one place for long periods of time, the risk of premature death begins to increase.
