A New Zealander spotted several attempts by a female and a juvenile pygmy sperm whale to come ashore at Mahia Beach in the northern part of Hawke’s Bay (on the archipelago’s North Island). He understood that the animals were doomed to die, but he did not expect that he would fail.
The man dragged the female waist-deep into the water, but immediately a hidden white shark attacked the sperm whale and bit off the female’s head. The man retreated to avoid falling victim to the shark. The baby, who was doomed to remain motherless, had to be euthanized.
Later, scientists called by the police froze the carcass of the pygmy sperm whale in order to determine the reasons why the marine mammals were thrown ashore.
