AMD was hoping to get permission from the US Department of Commerce to sell its AI chip to Chinese customers. But U.S. officials told the company that the chip was still too powerful and that selling it required a license from the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security. The company declined to comment and a spokesman for the Industry and Security Bureau also declined to comment. It is unclear whether AMD has applied for a license.
The United States is trying to limit China’s access to advanced semiconductors that can create artificial intelligence models, out of fear that Beijing will gain a military advantage. President Joe Biden’s administration implemented the first export restrictions in 2022 and strengthened them in October of that year.
