OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was excited about “the spirit of this letter” in a post on Platform X. The initiative was launched by venture capitalist Ron Conway and his firm SV Angel. The letter also includes contributions from Hugging Face, Scale AI, and dozens of other startups and tech companies.
Over the past year, many in the industry have welcomed the benefits of the technology but also raised alarms about its serious risks. SV Angel’s letter compares the impact of AI to other innovations such as the printing press, the internal combustion engine, electricity and the internet. It was noted that “the balance of positive and negative impacts on people will be shaped by the actions and thoughtfulness of us, the people.”
The letter was signed shortly after Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the startup of violating its mission for the sake of profit. OpenAI’s internal management dismissed the lawsuit, saying they disagreed with Musk.
