David Kao, MD, a cardiologist and assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, notes that you can drink coffee even if you have an irregular heart rhythm. Research generally shows that drinking normal amounts of caffeine is not associated with a higher risk of atrial fibrillation or reduces the risk altogether. Caffeine in general has an unfair bad reputation.

A 2021 study published in the journal Circulation: Heart Failure found that caffeinated coffee may actually reduce the likelihood of developing heart failure. This conclusion was reached after analyzing three scientific papers.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day (about four or five cups of coffee) is quite safe for healthy adults. But there are a few nuances. For example, people with caffeine sensitivity need to be careful because coffee can make them feel worse. Coffee may also be harmful to sleep disorders and anxiety disorders.

Coffee drinking recommendations for atrial fibrillation do not apply to all heart diseases or high blood pressure. Joglar recommended talking to your doctor to be sure. Additionally, these recommendations do not apply to every type of coffee. Most scientific research focuses on caffeinated black coffee.
