The OpenAI company, in response to the accusation of one of its founders, Elon Musk, of marketing the startup, indicated that the businessman wanted to merge the company with Tesla and achieve full control over the activities.

Previously, Elon Musk sued OpenAI and its co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. In his statement, the billionaire called OpenAI a “subsidiary” of Microsoft, which invested more than $10 billion in the company last year.
Musk noted that OpenAI is a closed-source company that works for profit and not “for the benefit of humanity.”
OpenAI, in turn, refuted the businessman’s thesis that the project is for profit. According to the company’s statement, the team regrets the change of heart of Elon Musk, who initially predicted the startup’s failure, then created a competitor xAI, and now decided to go to court.
On its blog, OpenAI details its version of working with Elon Musk. Apparently, at the time of its founding, the company only wanted to attract investments of 100 million dollars. But Elon Musk convinced him to announce a goal of $1 billion.
The company cites a letter from Musk himself, in which he assures that the startup needs “an amount much larger than $100 to not appear desperate in the context of Google and Facebook*.
In 2017, OpenAI announced that it needed “billions a year” to achieve its mission goals, amounts it could not raise as a nonprofit. At the same time, the management, together with Musk, began to think about creating a commercial structure.
Then, according to OpenAI, the businessman demanded that control of the board of directors and a majority stake be transferred to him. The businessman also planned to take on the position of general director. After receiving a refusal, Musk stopped investing in OpenAI and in 2018 proposed a merger with Tesla. When the proposal did not meet with enthusiasm, the businessman resigned from the OpenAI board of directors.
