To comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple has added new functionality to iOS 17.4 that allows European users to install what Apple calls “alternative app markets” on their devices. However, these solutions that allow users to download products outside the App Store will no longer work outside the EU.

In addition to notarizing that the products belong to the EU, the geographical location is determined by the devices. And if the user leaves the EU, alternative app marketplaces will cease to function. This means that for European alternatives to the App Store to work, the user must be physically present in the EU at all times.
