For example, the United States is pressuring the Netherlands to stop ASML from servicing complex chip manufacturing equipment previously purchased by the Chinese.
They didn’t forget Japan either; They demand limiting the supply of special chemicals from which modern chips cannot be made. And the Japanese are professionals in this field; Remember Shin-Etsu Chemical or Tokyo Ohka Kogyo.
Europe and Japan have so far reacted very measuredly to Washington. They say let’s first look at the impact of existing sanctions and then decide on new ones.
Beijing, meanwhile, is furious, calling U.S. policy not just repression but “crazy, ridiculous obsession.”
