106 people between the ages of 25 and 65 participated in the study. At first, all participants ate the same thing: all followed the same diet for 9 months, and 3 followed a calorie-restricted eating program. The participants were then divided into two groups: one group snacked on muesli and high-carb rice crackers between meals, and the other group snacked on almonds.

The results showed that those who ate almonds lost as much weight as those who ate the other snacks, with an overall weight loss of 9.3% across all participants. But almond eaters had higher rates of cardiometabolic health.

Scientists explain this effect with the high unsaturated fat content in almonds.
