TikTok sent a push notification to users in the US stating that “Congress intends to ban TikTok entirely” and that this would deprive “170 million Americans of their constitutional right to free speech.” The ban “will harm millions of businesses, destroy the livelihoods of countless creators across the country, and deprive artists of audiences,” the statement said. The notification also allows users to find their representatives and call their offices.
This came shortly after the White House announced its support for legislation targeting TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance. The Protecting Americans from Hostile State-Controlled Foreign Apps bill is a response to perceived national security threats from TikTok, particularly in terms of how the company collects user data. The bill requires TikTok to separate from ByteDance or face removal from US app stores.
