PFAS, often called “forever chemicals” because of their extreme persistence in the environment, have been linked to a variety of health problems, including immune system weakness, weight gain, and fertility problems. Previously used for their oil- and water-resistant properties, PFAS were often found in food packaging materials such as popcorn bags, takeout boxes and fast food wraps.
Experts are hailing this development as a major public health victory. “Nobody reads the packaging of their burger to see if it has PFAS,” says Graham Peasley, a PFAS researcher at the University of Notre Dame. “It’s a huge win that we don’t have to worry about where it ends up.”
