He announced that his company xAI will open source its chatbot Grok, making it publicly available.

What does “open source” mean? Imagine sharing your signature cake recipe with the world.

Anyone can take this recipe, modify it, improve it or even create a new dish based on it.

The same thing happens with open source: Programmers from all over the world can access the “inside” of a chatbot, modify it, find bugs and make it even better.

Why is it important? Open source makes chatbots more reliable and secure. The more people “look” at the code, the better the chance of bugs being found and fixed. This is especially true for chatbots that interact directly with humans, such as Grok and ChatGPT.
