General Gregory Guillot confirmed that the United States has only one operational heavy icebreaker, while Russia has about 40. “We are in a critical minority,” he said. Even with the ships on order, the U.S. icebreaker fleet would still be significantly smaller than the Russian fleet, Guillot added.

This issue has also raised concerns in Canada. Canadian General Blaise Frawley said he was “losing sleep” over Russia’s actions in the Arctic. He noted that the United States and Canada have a total of five icebreakers and plan to jointly build five more.

The difference in icebreaker capabilities is a major concern for security experts. Icebreakers are vital to maintaining a presence in the Arctic, which is increasingly important as sea ice melts due to climate change. The Arctic also contains strategic resources and sea lanes.
