Surveying more than 6,000 people, the study’s authors found a negative relationship between exposure to certain workplace technologies and workers’ mental health.
Constant monitoring of employees creates a stressful environment and contributes to the feeling of being watched and controlled. Fear of job loss due to automation leaves employees feeling anxious and uncertain. While these technologies are often touted as helpful, the lack of transparency in AI-powered decision-making can lead to “feelings of powerlessness and decreased job satisfaction.”
Interestingly, the study found that traditional information and communication technologies such as laptops, tablets and messaging tools have a positive impact on employees. These tools provide flexibility and improve communication, potentially increasing business efficiency.
The study highlights the mismatch between companies’ claims about artificial intelligence and the reality on the ground. While generative AI promises increased productivity, it is often cited as a cause of job losses.
