Designed to provide fire superiority at long ranges, the ERCA system included a 58-caliber gun mounted on the Paladin howitzer chassis. However, tests revealed excessive wear on the extended barrel after a limited number of shots.

The Army will now evaluate existing long-range artillery options offered by industry rather than developing an entirely new design.

While development of ERCA has been halted, the Army has requested $55 million in the Fiscal Year 2025 budget to fund this new study.
