In the first months of 2023, the audience for online cinemas has grown dramatically. At the beginning of the year, 49% of Russians used one or another subscription (including free and trial). Such data is provided by the research company GfK.

Almost half of Russians use online cinema subscriptions

In the fourth quarter of 2022, 46% of the country’s residents had subscriptions to online cinemas. The same percentage was in the first quarter of last year. At the same time, in the second and third quarters, the number of subscribers decreased to 42% and 44%, respectively.

Since the beginning of 2023, a strong jump was recorded, the total audience of online cinemas increased to 49%. This is the first such significant increase since late 2021.

The market leader is Kinopoisk. 21.1% of urban residents subscribe to this service. The paid subscription retains 15.4%. Online cinema received the highest revenue in 2022 among similar Russian services.

The second place is taken by the Ivy service, which 10.1% of Russians have subscribed to, and 5.8% have a paid subscription. In third place is Wink, she is somewhat inferior to Evie in terms of the total number of users (9.1%), but is ahead of her competitor in terms of the number of paid subscriptions – 6.2%.

KION increased the total number of users from 5.8% to 7.9%. There was an increase in the audience that pays for the content – from 3.4% to 4.2%. In START, the total number of subscribers increased from 1.6% to 2.2%. 1.1% contracted a paid subscription (compared to 0.8% at the end of 2022).

In last place is Amediateka with 0.9% of subscribers and 0.6% of those who pay a subscription. At the same time, the service, unlike other large online cinemas, closed 2022 without a loss. The net profit of A Serial LLC, the main legal entity of the service, increased by 37.1% and reached 970.7 million rubles.
