The US Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Apple, accusing the company of a genuine monopoly in the smartphone market.
According to the department, Apple restricts conditions for developers and inflates prices to retain iPhone users and complicate the transition to Android, using the following rules:
▪️ Blocking game streaming apps that could reduce the need for more expensive hardware.
▪️ Degraded messaging between iPhone and competing platforms such as Android.
▪️ Limits the functionality of turning on smartwatches from iPhone and makes it difficult for Apple Watch users to switch from iPhone due to compatibility issues with other settings.
▪️ Prohibition of entry for developers creating applications with a reduced Tap-to-Pay variable.
Also in a similar vein, it is said that Apple used its iPhone app control capability to ban apps that made it easier for users to switch phones.
Apple uses its monopoly power to extract as much money as possible from consumers, developers, content creators, artists, publishers, fitness businesses, and retailers.
US Department of Justice
Apple strongly disagrees with all of the allegations, both as a matter of fact and as a matter of law.
This risk threatens our principles and principles that differentiate Apple products in fiercely competitive markets. If successful, it will hinder our ability to create the technology people expect from Apple – where hardware, software and services intersect. It also sets a dangerous precedent by giving the government the ability to tightly control the development of technology for people. We believe that this complaint is illegitimate as a matter of fact and law, and we will believe that it is written by him.
Fred Sainz, Apple spokesman
The case against Apple has been in preparation since 2019, when the Ministry of Justice announced an antitrust investigation into the company.
Apple has become the second largest technology company in the US to face an office lawsuit. Last year, the Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google. [The Verge]
