Telegram will be blocked in Spain by decision of the National Court

The national court decided to block Telegram as a precautionary measure following a complaint filed by Mediaset España, Antena 3, Movistar Plus and EGEDA, the rights management organization for audiovisual producers. They accuse the popular messaging service of hosting and facilitating the distribution of copyrighted content without permission.

The order came from Judge Santiago Pedraza after no response from those responsible for Telegram. Although the service is still active at the time of publishing this news, it will stop operating in Spain at any point over the weekend once telecom operators implement the block.

According to official information from the company, Telegram has about 800 million monthly active users worldwide. At the moment, representatives of the messaging service do not comment on the blockade in Spain.

The blockade may last several hours or days, depending on the judge’s decision or the time it takes from Telegram in response to demands from the National Court.
