According to official information, Seoul’s current capacity is not sufficient to adequately monitor North Korean territory. For these purposes, the South Korean Ministry of Defense ordered 10 to 20 small reconnaissance satellites and about 40 special cubesats (microsatellites). Small satellites are planned to be launched in 2026-2028, and microsatellites in 2028-2030.
The Korean military department believes that the deployment of a new satellite system will allow exploration of North Korean territory every half hour.
