For the uninitiated, RCS (Rich Communication Services) offers a significant improvement over traditional SMS/MMS messaging. We’re talking features like improved image and video quality, read receipts, and emoji reactions; All of these are currently missing from iPhone and Android devices.
The news comes from a deleted slide from the Google Messages web page spotted by 9to5Google. The slide boldly states: “Apple announced it will adopt RCS in fall 2024.” While neither Google nor Apple has officially confirmed this information, the timing is in line with the usual fall release schedule for new iPhones.
This news is of great importance considering the recent lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice against Apple for its alleged app store monopoly. One of the key points was frustration with cross-platform messaging. Previously, there was a “fight” between CEO Tim Cook and a man who could not send photos to his mother due to his Android phone. Cook advised him to “buy your mom an iPhone.”
