This decision comes after years of criticism over the use of the image. First scanned from the front page of Playboy in 1973, Lenna Forsen’s photo has become an integral part of imaging research due to its technical features. However, its “sexually suggestive nature” created an unwelcoming environment for many women in the field.
Although Playboy did not initially notice copyright infringement, Forsen expressed mixed feelings. She was amused and even proud of the photo at the time, but later expressed regret over the compensation and the photo’s impact on women in tech. In 2019, he joined a campaign calling for the image to be removed, saying: “It’s time for me to retire too.”
