The Federal Tax Service (FTS) has revealed the current number of Russians with accounts abroad: at the end of 2023, they were 539,000. At the same time, the number of foreign accounts reached 1.8 million, RBC writes, citing data from the Federal Tax Service.

The department receives data on foreign account holders through the automatic exchange of information with foreign countries, which occurs every year.
The exchange mechanism is designed so that in 2023 the tax office receives information on foreign accounts of individuals (they represent 99% of open accounts) by 2022.
Thus, in 2023, the Federal Tax Service knew about 1.825 million foreign accounts of Russian tax residents, an increase of 164%, or 2.6 times (the service did not specify with which year the figure is compared, but by default It should be the previous year).
The tax office last announced data on foreign account growth in early 2021; At that time, the Federal Tax Service was aware of 700 thousand accounts of Russians abroad for a total amount of more than 13 trillion rubles. They were owned by 400 thousand people.
The number of account holders at the end of 2023 amounted to 539.1 thousand, 70% more than the previous figure.
Thus, for every Russian tax resident who has accounts abroad, there were an average of 3.4 financial accounts abroad.
Experts interviewed by RBC attribute this increase to the fact that in 2022 Russians actively looked in friendly countries for an alternative to outgoing Visa and Mastercard to pay for their trips abroad.
