In 2018, Amazon opened its first Just Walk Out stores. They didn’t have a cash register.
The idea, according to the company, was that a Special AI scans through a variety of cameras to standardize your shopping cart, and then independently punches it. The result – you left, and everything was already paid.
It turned out that Amazon had deceived everyone. There was no AI in these stores, but instead shoppers followed thousands of industries. They were engaged in punching goods. It’s likely that some kind of AI was used to control the process, but lately the number of “hidden employees” has been far from ideal.
The company faced the challenge of selling to other organizations, but it didn’t work out. In addition, Amazon was sued for unauthorized collection of biometric data.
Customers often complained that either they received their magic receipt late or that order management was incorrect. As a result, Amazon decided to close these stores in the US, but leave some of the locations in the UK. For how long, time will tell. [Engadget]
