Results of a recent study showed that a 10-minute virtual reality (VR) session significantly reduced pain in hospitalized cancer patients. For this trial, Hunter Groninger, MD, of Georgetown University School of Medicine and MedStar Health, and colleagues recruited 128 adults with cancer and moderate to severe pain.

The team found that both the VR intervention and 3D-assisted images on the iPad reduced pain. But virtual reality sessions had a greater impact. Patients in the 3D imaging group reported an average reduction in pain scores of 0.7, while patients in the VR group reported an average reduction of 1.4 (on a scale of 1 to 10).

Additionally, 24 hours after the intervention, the intensity of pain decreased by 1.7 points compared to baseline in people in the VR group and by 0.3 points in people in the 3D vision group. Additionally, after the virtual reality session, patients reported improvements in their pain discomfort (how much the pain bothered them) and their overall distress.
